It's True!

Rumors have been swirling all around The Island that two local musicians have teamed up to write a screenplay! Inspired by the critical acclaim of "Brokeback Mountain", these guys decided to jump on the band wagon, and banged out a script with a similar theme!

My sources at Universal liked their initial effort, but ultimately rejected it as too cute and too derivative. They even sent me this video of some of the scenes from this screenplay.

However, the studio was not discouraged, and sent our budding screen writers off to a bungalow at the Beverly Hilton, and told them to "Write about what you know!" They didn't waste any time!

The new script takes a much different direction. This story is set in Galveston, and begins when a local Rock band does not receive their rightful place on the main stage at local Mardi Gras celebration, when they are rejected by The Park Board for dubious reasons. Incensed by this outrage, two of the members of the band scheme to get even by robbing The Park Board offices, that will be overflowing with cash during the celebration. They figure that they can easily pull off the perfect crime by wearing outlandish Mardi Gras costumes, so no one can recognize them. The first inkling of what is to come occurs when they discover how much they like "dress up"!

Unfortunately, their heist is foiled when a Barney-Fife-like security guard stumbles in on the robbery, and gets the drop on them! After a short trial, the musicians are off to a new life in Huntsville!

Their lives are changed forever when the sinister warden decides to make them cell mates. After a short time, in close confinement, our heroes discover that they have fallen under the spell of "the love that dare not speak its name". Their new relationship inspires them to start a Rock & Roll band in prison, both as a creative outlet, and an opportunity to "give something back".

It isn't long before their band, "The Outstanding Warrants", has a hit on the national charts! Their first album is so good that it even threatens to outsell "Darkside of the Moon"! The story follows our heroes as they achieve the fame and fortune that alluded them on the outside, and we share their pain and angst as they are unable to enjoy it in their prison cell.

The story builds to a climax when our heroes are paroled, and return to Galveston. They worry whether their old friends will accept their new "lifestyle", as they set up housekeeping in their "tastefully decorated" loft above Club 21; and they wait to see whether or not their Grammy-award-winning band will get a gig on the main stage at this year's Mardi Gras. They are racked with anxiety as they wait to see whether The Park Board will snub them once again.

I am told that the working title for this screenplay is "Bunkmate Buddies", but Universal wants a new title before the film is released. That is why the studio is looking for your help. If you have a new title for this story, send it in to me, and I will forward it to my contact at Universal. If your title is chosen, you will be the studio's VIP guest at the premiere, when it is held at The Grand Opera House!
