The Non-Smoking Prescription!

According to last Friday’s issue of the Daily News, the “Do-Gooders”, who are pushing to ban smoking in the City of Galveston, have been lobbying the City Council since the last public meeting; so they will get their wish! In order to understand how this process really works, it is necessary to study the people Dr. Thomas Sowell calls “The Anointed”.

The Anointed are always acting for “the greater good”, but the effects of their actions are like the pharmaceuticals that are advertised so widely these days. They MIGHT reduce some of the symptoms that they are targeting, at least temporarily, but there is a very long list of side effects from everything that they do!

Banning smoking MIGHT benefit everyone’s health, but the economic damage to local businesses, their employees, the musicians who play at the clubs, and the City will be a side-effect to the “prescribed” course of action.

Since the 1970s, The Anointed have fought oil and gas exploration and drilling, and have blocked the construction of new refineries; all for the healthful benefits that restricting the use of petroleum would bestow on all of us. As the side effects of this “prescription” grew worse and worse, the public paid for the “health benefits” with $3.00 per gallon gasoline and sky-high natural gas prices. As is always the case, when the side effects became very painful, The Anointed pointed the finger at everyone else but themselves!

There are those who say a smoking ban will not harm Galveston’s bars and nightclubs. They argue that smokers will easily adapt by spending half the evening standing out on the sidewalk in order to smoke. Why would they want to do so? Even if they don’t mind being outcasts, they won’t be buying drinks while they are outside; but, oh well, that’s just another “side effect”. Who cares! It only hurts the club owners and their employees! There is no price too high for SOMEONE ELSE to pay, in order to achieve the greater good, as defined by The Anointed!

When the economic side effects of the proposed smoking ban become severe enough, the City or even the Park Board may be forced to “diagnose the problem”. If the obvious answer is not acceptable, it will be time to hire a consulting company, and pay them thousands of dollars to discover what killed the bar and club business in Galveston. Of course, it will be the height of irony, and insanity, to pay someone to solve this “mystery”, since we already know where to point the finger; but this is how it always goes when you’re dealing with a problem created by The Anointed!

If you begin to see your favorite musicians playing on street corners, instead of in the local clubs; be sure to drop a quarter into their tip jars!
