  I'm A Prisoner of Rock & Roll!

By Patti Williams

Hello, my name is Patty Williams and I'm a musical snob. Merriam-Webster Online defines snob as "one inclined to rebuff or ignore people or things that he regards as inferior." Yes, that describes me to a tee. I suppose a better description would be that I'm a Classic Rock snob, although that's not completely accurate either; I do also like some Oldies music. But other than that, I regard the rest as inferior.

Yes kids I'm a snob, through and through. There's almost nothing else in the world I love more than Classic Rock, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I have neither the inclination nor the desire to seek therapy for my affliction. I enjoy it. I revel in it. I will not apologize and I will not make excuses. To quote Popeye, "I am what I am."

Do not attempt to help me by suggesting other music I might enjoy.

You'll be wasting your time and mine. I've heard it all -- "Oh, this band sounds just like so-and-so." "If you love Classic Rock, you'll love these guys." "You need to be more open-minded and listen to this." Phooey! Been there, done that. I have everything from Meat Puppets to Crash Test Dummies in my collection, all having been suggested by well-meaning friends. And right now they're all collecting dust, or have become playthings for my kids.

I am the worst kind of snob -- the kind that complains and complains loudly when forced to listen to music I don't enjoy. I've asked music stores to change their selection while I'm browsing (most refused, but that's beside the point). I've left restaraunts because I couldn't stand the noise playing in the background. I've asked employers to switch radio stations that I found irritating, and once quit a job where I had to listen to Country Music all day long. Yes, I'm a terminal case.

I envy those who can listen to all kinds of music. An ex co-worker once said she didn't care what was on the radio because music didn't matter to her and she rarely paid attention. I nearly swallowed my coffee cup when I heard that. How could music not matter? Is it not what we live and breathe for? Is it not a reflection of our souls, the essence of who we are? To not love music, whatever the type, is to deny the very thing that makes us human!

But I digress.

In my musical travels I have encountered those that have said, "I love all kinds of music...except Opera." Nobody seems to like Opera.

But again I digress.

I also look with envy upon those open-minded souls who can find redeeming value in anything they hear. How wonderful it must be, to listen to Hootie and the Blowfish and not have the desire to smash the radio. What a great feeling, to turn on Rap and not have your stomach twist into a knot, your fists clench and your blood pressure rise dangerously high. How liberating, indeed, to turn on a Britney Spears video and not have to supress your gag reflex. I would love to be able to enjoy music in all its forms, yet I remain a prisoner of Rock and Roll.

But do not pity me. I live in this self-imposed prison by choice. I will be the first to admit that I'm narrow-minded, stubborn, obstinant, difficult, and every other adjective that your thesaurus can supply. I would rather hear "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Woman From Tokyo" than anything else in the world. A thousand Top-40 hits can't take the place of "White Room" and "Closer To Home." Sisqo and Kid Rock will never be a match for the Stones and Jethro Tull.

Nobody on this planet can make into something I'm not.

I'm a musical snob, and I embrace that.
