  Producing Cover CDs!

There are many different ways that a band could go about producing their CDs for sale, including copying the CDs themselves on a desk top computer, but that would still leave printing on the CDs, and the artwork, as well as the assembly of the art work into the jewel case, that would make a do-it-yourself process a tedious and inefficient choice. It may not even be possible to save any money doing it this way.

There are probably hundreds of CD duplicating companies in this country that can do the job much more efficiently. I spoke to the two that my friend, from Austin, Kenny Palyola, KPTrio.com has used for his CDs. At least this way, I know that they are reputable and reliable companies.

The first one was Disc Makers of Pennsauken, NJ.

They offer a great CD Package that includes:

1. The CD

2. A Jewel Box/Case with Black, White or Clear trays

3. Full-color one page inserts and tray cards (B&W on the inside)
4. Three-color on disc printing
5. Free UPC bar code

This package runs: $1,290 for 500, or $1,390 for 1,000

As they said, it's a no-brainer to go for 1,000!

In addition, they do NOT require any proof of royalty payments to do the production, so you could order 1,000, and only pay the royalties on 500, until you sell the first 500, and then pay for the royalties on the last 500! Many CDs duplicators, that I looked at on the Internet, require proof of royalty payment BEFORE they will begin production, which means that you would have to pay the royalties on all 1,000 at the beginning, and the process may be delayed while you wait for publishers to process the paperwork!!

If you only pay the royalties on the first 500 to begin with, the initial outlay would be $1,390 + about $637.50 = $2,027.50. When the first 500 were sold, you'd have to pay another $637.50 to finish the sales.

Therefore, for $1,390 + $637.50 + $637.50 = $2,665.00 you could have 1,000 CDs to sell.

If they were sold for $10@ or $10,000 - $2,665.00 = $7,335 PROFIT!

If they were sold for $12@ or $12,000 - $2,665.00 = $9,335 PROFIT!!

The only other issue is the art work. If you don't want to do the artwork yourself, they will do it all for you for $290. However, they give you all the directions on their web site, including templates, on how to do it yourself.

One other alternative is to choose a CD in a Jacket.

They run $990 for 1,000.

Therefore, for $990 + $637.50 + $637.50 = $2,265.00 you could have 1,000 CDs for sale.

If they were sold for $10@ or $10,000 - $2,265.00 = $7,735 PROFIT!

CDs in Jackets

Disc Makers
can deliver the CDs in about 2-3 weeks after they have the CD Master and artwork!

I also called the other company that Kenny has used, Affordable Sound in Austin.

They have basically the same package offered by Disc Makers, using a jewel case, for $999!! Oddly, if you want the CD packaged in a jacket it is $1,095.

Unfortunately, they REQUIRE written proof of all royalty payments BEFORE they will begin, AND they require royalties to be paid on
1,100 copies, just in case they have a production over run.

If necessary, Affordable Sound can do the artwork for the package, but they charge $60/hour rather than a flat rate like Disc Makers.

Obviously, it is wise to shop around before making a final choice, but a company like Disc Makers, that does not require proof of royalty payments before proceeding, would be the best choice, since it will require a lower initial investment, and the process will not be delayed waiting for paperwork from any publishers, if it is needed.

P.S.

On 18 December 2005, J.D. Richards recommended Disk Faktory. They have a 50 CD for $59 deal that is very hard to beat! J.D. reports excellent quality CDs on his first order!!

I don't know how they deal with the royalty issue.

No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway!
