Wednesday 13 April 2005 My Texas Music.com! When I was preparing the article on ways to sell cover CDs, I looked at different places to sell on the Internet. Two sites that seemed like good choices were CDBaby.com and MyTexasMusic.com. However, when I was reading the selling terms on the MyTexasMusic.com site, it said that they take a 70% commission! This seemed way too high to me, so I didn't mention them in the article! After I posted it, the owner of MyTexasMusic.com, Lucky Boyd, contacted me to point out that the selling terms on his site were "inverted"! The commission should have read 30%, and with higher sales it can drop to 20% or 25%! He also made a strong pitch for the idea that Texas musicians should only deal with Texas-based music companies, to keep the money in this state. Due to the fact that I am the ultimate Libertarian laissez-faire, free-market capitalist, I don't share Lucky's views on only using Texas-based companies for your music ventures, but now that he has clarified their terms, it is obvious that his company does have a lot to offer Texas musicians!! Therefore, it would be a good idea to compare MyTexasMusic.com, and what they can do for you, to everyone else in the market place, and find the best deal for yourself. When a Texas-based band is selling a CD, it primarily needs to be concerned with how to maximize its profit from the venture, and if a company in Hong-Kong is the best way to do this; so be it! After all, the band's profit is all going to come back to Texas, no matter who they deal with for production or sales. With that said, I do think that everyone should contact Lucky to see what he can do for you, because he does offer an array of services besides just selling CDs on the Internet! His email went on to say: "... with things like overseas distribution through our non-on line distribution company, compilation CDs, an annual calendar and CD that goes to radio stations, all over, showcasing the top 12 sellers each year, schedule posting, review posting, a CD review for every title, festival sales, booking services, conferences and showcases with talent buyers and record producers, and the list goes on and on. PLUS we report to SoundScan, we send free gifts with every order, take pre-orders, sell down loadable CDs if the artist wants, keep track of former customers so artists can announce new products, send a newsletter twice monthly to over 10,000 subscribers, and yes, the list goes on and on again. We're a family of Texas musicians including names you know like Bobby Mitchell, Hayes Carll, JD Richards, Kelly McGuire, Mike Kelly, Shake Russell, Sweet Mama Cotton, and Wrecks Bell. See Article to see what the Galveston Daily News had to say about us. After the move, our programmers will finish the roll out of a new national targeted site that is designed specifically to compete with CDBaby on all levels. We will have features they can't offer. It'll be fun." Membership is a one-time fee of $15, and it costs another $10 to set up each CD you want to sell; so for $25, you'll be ready to start selling your first CD! Membership Info You can also sell T-Shirts and other band gear! |
