"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." Dr. Hunter S. Tuesday 19 April 2005 Back in the Day! By Lanis Neugent When I was about 15 - 17 years old, my dad, a local attorney, was friends with a guy that booked the old Galveston Moody Center soul shows. We always had free tickets and sat with the band. We often went back stage to meet the artists. I saw and met James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Bobby Blue Bland, Joe Tex and many more. Once we got invited to a local Black juke joint in La Marque called The G & M Pleasure Spot, and we were the only White guys in there. I brought a friend from school who shared my enthusiasm for R&B music. We sat 15 feet from the stage, and heard Otis Redding, who had a “fill in” guitar player that night named Jimmie Hendrix, though he was not popular at that time. What a great show in a small venue that probably held 150 people! I went back to hear other performers that year. It gave me the idea to work in the music business, which I did as a booking agent for 10 years, and did some consulting for night clubs and later festivals on music promoting, marketing etc. It all started in Galveston. |
