Wednesday 11 May 2005 Kim Fowley by Lanis Neugent It was 1992. I lived in Austin, and ran a trade school by day, and dabbled in music by night. I was a member of the Texas Music Association, which met monthly on 6th street, in a bar called the Old Pecan Street Café. I was sitting at the bar while Susan Walker (Jerry Jeff’s wife) gave a talk. The guy sitting next to me was a odd looking cuss if I ever saw one: Tall with wrinkled clothes, and he sort of looked out of place. He started a conversation with me, and as he talked, he started dropping some big names, and told me he was a record producer from Hollywood, and had managed, or worked with, numerous stars including: KISS, Scorpion, Helen Ready, Dick Clark and more. I guess he could tell that I was not sure he had all his screws turning right, so he said "come with me, I live upstairs, above this cafe, in a loft apartment". I thought “I’m going to bust this guy, because I think he is exaggerating, to the max, to me”. We entered his apartment, which had a old mattress on the floor, and clothes stuffed in boxes, a microwave, and a tv/vcr, and beer in the fridge, and that’s it! He said he traveled from city to city looking for bands to sign, and basically lives out of Goodwill stores, as far as clothes, bedding etc. As we turned the corner to walk down a long hallway, I saw a wall filled with gold and platinum albums, and music awards. A long table sat near the kitchen, with at least a dozen books, that had articles about him. Some of the platinum albums were from KISS, SCORPION and HELEN READY! Kim and I actually had some minor business dealings, after that, some with the staff of Austin City Limits, and I would occasionally, run into him in Austin hustling investors for music projects. He was a genius when it came to music, and he had a very high IQ! You can research him, and find out he is legit, and well known in the industry. He was one of the most unique individuals I have ever met!! He was also a member of the Hollywood Argyles that produced the accidental hit record “Alley OOP”, in the early 1960’s.
