"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." Dr. Hunter S. Neal! When you mention the name "Neal",
in Galveston,
everyone knows who you are talking about. It's no
different than when you say "Frank"
in Las Vegas,
or Hollywood. Neal Witwer is one of the Founding Fathers
of the Rock
and Roll music community in Galveston. He
organized, and started one of the first local Rock &
Roll bands, The
1900 Storm, in 1959;
and ever since then, he has been a local institution!
Many of the bands, playing our local clubs today, have one or
more members, who have played
with Neal,
in one band or another, over
the
years! For these reasons, Neal has
had a profound,
and enduring
influence on the local music scene, for almost 50 years!![]() One of Neal's many bands; The Proper Circle; circa 1966 Last week, Neal reached a major milestone; 60 revolutions around the Sun without a fatal overdose, or plane crash, so it was time to celebrate. There was only one problem. As an important figure in the American institution of Rock and Roll, Neal has become a target of the terrorists, who hate our way of life. One cell, controlled by the infamous Baghdad Rosie, has been after him lately, so the party had to be held in a secret, undisclosed location, under heavy security. ![]() Bagdad Rosie; hot on Neal's trail Neal arrived, at the party, Saturday afternoon, complete with his entourage, and his patented wireless bass rig, twirling in circles. Just being around Neal is like living life on fast forward. Some say that he has a "unique personalty", others say its just the speed! However, no matter how "unique" you think he is, it gets really bizarre when you see the people he attracts into his life! He didn't waste a second
before he announced that he is assembling still another incarnation
of The 1900
Storm! His new lead
singer is some weird
Euro-trash
dude,
from Germany,
named Guta.
Neal
explained that he would be teaching
Guta just
enough English
so that he could get through the vocals. Think
about that for
a minute; a German
speaking English
like Neal!
How will he be able to
talk that fast, or that pitch? wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwGuta On lead guitar, Neal has scored a guy named Roach, who was recently a big hit with a band called "The Usual Suspects" in the Michigan State Prison. Now that he is out on parole, he will be ready to join The Storm, as soon as he gets out of rehab. Now, all Neal needs is a drummer, and he is ready to go! ![]() Roach Neal has had his share of Groupies over the years, but only one has stuck with him since The 1900 Storm started in 1959. Yes, Shirley was there to wish him a happy 60th birthday! ![]() Shirley If you missed Neal's party, send him a note, wishing him a happy birthday by NOTE: I had planned to publish this article last Friday, but I woke up that morning to find that my computer had died! After a lot of frantic troubleshooting, I called T.J. Olson (765-4311), and he saved my ass! T.J. had me up and running again by Sunday night!! Thanks, T.J.!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
