East Beach Music - Galveston's Overlooked Treasure!

This is the only place, in the entire country, that I have discovered, which provides a venue for Rock and Roll bands to play right on the beach!! What an experience! Sitting in the pavilion, while the band rocks the deck, as the ships roll by in the channel, and the waves lap up on the beach! Where else does such a place exist? Nowhere!!

No Difference?

The other night, I was watching The History Channel, and their take on Elvis effect on American culture, and the birth of Rock and Roll. At one point, there was a discussion about how each group of young people, since the birth of Rock and Roll, tends to think that the music that was created when they were 15-25 years old is better than what came before it, and better than what came later. In other words, many people believe that there are no objective standards by which to judge Rock and Roll, and everyone is prejudiced towards the music of their own era!

I have heard this argument before, and I have always rejected this piece of Conventional Wisdom! Music reflects the time in history when it is created, and first performed, and it should be obvious that there are tremendous differences between many historical periods. Was life more fun in the 1920s or 1930s? Well the music of those two decades reflected that difference!

The Bolivar Peninsula!

There are seven venues on The Bolivar Peninsula that plan to offer live music this season. None of them schedule music every Friday and Saturday night, but they all say that they will be booking more live music as we get further into the Spring and Summer season. There are opportunities for soloists and bands. If you're interested, it's time to make some calls, and send out your Promotion Packages.

Cadillac Caravan Chronicles: April 02, 2002: When the Caravan Ends...?

Our June 03, 1999 Press Release stated that our trips to Galveston, TX had "captivated and inspired us to consider making dramatic changes in our lives". We became so fond of Galveston that we began to consider living there. It further stated that our trips to The Island helped us "to clarify what criteria are important to us in choosing where we want to live, at this point in our lives. We decided that we would like someplace that is on the ocean, south of the Mason-Dixon Line and in a city that's smaller than Phoenix." ..."we feel it's time to live near the water and we find ourselves most comfortable with the culture of "The South"."

The Five Levels of Drinking!

LEVEL 1:
It's 11:00 PM on a weeknight, you've had a few beers. You get up to leave because you have to work the next day, and one of your friends buys another round. One of your UNEMPLOYED friends. Here at Level 1, you think to yourself, "Oh come on, this is silly, why as long as I get seven hours of sleep (you snap your fingers), I'm cool".

The Non-Smoking Scam!

The Founding Fathers created a Constitutional Republic for a free, independent and self-reliant people. One of the key elements of that government was the protection of the people from the government itself, and from what they called the tyranny of the majority. Such a tyranny could be perpetrated on any person, or minority group, by a majority, simply by voting away one or more of their rights. In more modern times, this tyranny is more often inflicted by the court system, rather than through the ballot box.

The Non-Smoking Prescription!

According to last Fridays issue of the Daily News, the Do-Gooders, who are pushing to ban smoking in the City of Galveston, have been lobbying the City Council since the last public meeting; so they will get their wish! In order to understand how this process really works, it is necessary to study the people Dr. Thomas Sowell calls The Anointed.

Farewell James!

I met James Hairris, many Moons ago, when he was the manager of The Balinese Room. We hit it off right away, because we were both so gung-ho on the local music scene! James wanted to really make an impact, and take things to a whole new level at The Balinese Room, but, unfortunately, he was unable to implement his vision there, so he quit to look for other ways to do so.

Bands That Changed The World!

The opening guitar licks on "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" signaled that something very fundamental had changed; that the world would never be the same! It was 1965, and The Rolling Stones sensed the change and embodied it into a song; but more than that, they were pioneering a new musical genre!

Non-Smoking Live-Music Clubs?

Regardless of all of the charts and data that the special-interest group pushing for a smoke-free Galveston has to "support" their position, anecdotal evidence from other cities, with smoke-free music clubs; and common sense, say that such an ordinance will hurt our live-music business.

Since many of the regular customers of these clubs are smokers, a no-smoking ordinance will reduce their patronage. Then when they do go to a club, they will spend all of the breaks between sets, and possibly more time than this, outside smoking, where they will NOT be buying drinks!! This will reduce the owner's income!

J.D. Richards

J.D.'s a "been there, done that, school of hard knocks, wouldn't have missed it for the world" kind of guy. But, just how does a Beaumont boy, a sickly child with bad eyes, who wasn't allowed to play sports get himself invited at age 17 to a Houston Astros try-out camp? And, just how does an 18-year old with no prior singing experience practice two weeks with a garage band and win a talent show outright?

And, how does an otherwise semi-normal, run-of-the-mill, genius type end up becoming the self-proclaimed happy "old man of the seawall" and writing over 410 songs about Galveston, its history and its people?

Les Paul!

Leave it to Don Emerson, the mad sound man of Galveston, to lead me on a trip down memory lane, and set me off on another music-history lesson! A few days ago, Don shoved a copy of the Les Paul and Friends CD through my mail slot. Here was The Master himself playing on tracks with young guys like Kenny Wayne Shepard, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Billy Gibbons, Neal Schon, Jeff Beck, Richie Sambora, Buddy Guy, Keith Richards, Rick Derringer, Johnny Rzeznik, Barry Goldstein, Hiram Bullock, Steve Miller, and Joe Perry!!

Listening to these cuts set me off on a search to refresh my memory on what I already knew about Les Paul, and to find out more about what I didn't know. I knew that he was a 5-time Grammy winner, with several gold records, and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; but I didn't know that Les was also a member of the Inventor's Hall of Fame!

George!

Like all "artistic types", my good friend, and local renaissance man, George Douglas Lee is riddled with Inner Demons. However, George is more astute than most, so he checks himself in to The Texas State Hospital For The Criminally Insane, at least twice a year for a "tune up". This facility, in Waco, was formally run by the Branch Davidians, so it is just what George needs to relax and recuperate from his frenzied schedule!

With a new CD-release tour about to begin, George was off to Waco again last week. He received some intense psychotherapy, a quick lobotomy to calm his nerves, and a complete physical. When his doctor returned with the test results he said, "George, you're full of shit!". George nodded, and said that everyone had been telling him that since he was ten years old; so what else was new!

Galveston Music Scene announces the creation of a new web site: The Real Galveston.com! Unlike the mythical Land of Oz; The Magical Island Kingdom of Galveston actually does exist!! It is located on the eastern end of Galveston Island, in the area bounded by the Gulf of Mexico on the South, The Ship Channel on the East, Galveston Harbor on the North and 39th Street on the West. In this roughly 10 square mile area, there is a rare convergence of very unique conditions which form a rich, textured, multi-layered way of life that is found no where else!
Cruise Gigs!

Another way to find more lucrative opportunities than offered by local clubs, is to look for gigs on cruise ships!! This is a very convenient possibility with Galveston becoming a major cruise port. Princess Cruises wants a 5-minute video to be included in your Promotion Package, and it's likely that the others may want one, too. However, if you have completed a standard Promotion Package, but don't have a good quality video available, I would be tempted to send off your Promo Pack, and see what happens. They can always request a video, after they go over your Promo Pack; if they have an interest in your band!

Skip Devlin!

It was many months ago when my good friend James asked me if I had ever heard a guy named Skip Devlin play guitar. I had not. He went on to say that Skip had been out of "the business" for 15 or 16 years, but that he could still "get the job done"! James introduced me to Skip that night, at The Balinese Room, and we got a chance to hear him jam with two other excellent guitar players, so it was hard to get a good sense of what he can do.

Come To The Rescue!

The Hurricane Club, at 6303 Broadway, is one of only a handful of year-round live-music venues on The Island. It has been at this location for many years under various names including RoBob's, but it is being forced to close on 13 June, IF they can't find a place to relocate their club! They had a deal on another property, but it fell through at the last minute

Kim Fowley!

It was 1992. I lived in Austin, and ran a trade school by day and dabbled in music by night. I was a member of the Texas Music Association which met monthly on 6th street in a bar called the Old Pecan Street Cafe. I was sitting at the bar while Susan Walker (Jerry Jeff's wife) gave a talk. The guy sitting next to me was a odd looking cuss if I ever saw one: Tall with wrinkled clothes and sort of looked out of place!

New Venue With Profit Sharing!

My article on The Perfect Nite Club makes the point that the local music business is stifled and curtailed, to some extent, because club owners accept more risk than they would like, when they pay bands fixed fees, regardless of their profits, during the time the band is playing. It went on to say that club owners should be much more willing to hire bands, more often, if they could REDUCE their risk by sharing it with the bands.

Producing Cover CDs!

There are many different ways that a band could go about producing their CDs for sale, including copying the CDs themselves on a desk top computer, but that would still leave printing on the CDs, and the artwork, as well as the assembly of the art work into the jewel case, that would make a do-it-yourself process a tedious and inefficient choice. It may not even be possible to save any money doing it this way.
